How to Crochet a Pumpkin Coaster

A festive decoration

Autumn is a magical time of the year, with the leaves changing color, the air getting cooler, and pumpkin spice everything. Why not bring a touch of this charm to your home with a DIY pumpkin coaster? Here’s a simple guide to crochet your own pumpkin coaster – perfect for your fall-themed table setting.

Materials:

  1. Orange cotton yarn (for the pumpkin)
  2. Green cotton yarn (for the stem)
  3. Crochet hook (size suitable for your yarn)
  4. Scissors
  5. Tapestry needle

Instructions:

1. Foundation Chain:
Begin with the orange yarn. Make a slip knot and chain 6. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

2. Round 1:
Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet). Make 11 double crochets into the ring. Join to the top of the chain 3. You should have 12 stitches.

3. Round 2:
Chain 3. Double crochet into the same stitch. Then, make 2 double crochets in each stitch around. Join to the top of the chain 3. You should now have 24 stitches.

4. Round 3:
Chain 3. Double crochet into the same stitch. Then, 1 double crochet in the next stitch, followed by 2 double crochets in the subsequent stitch. Repeat from * to * around. Join to the top of the chain 3. You should have 36 stitches.

5. Shaping the Pumpkin Ridges:
To give our coaster a pumpkin feel, we’re going to create ridges.

  • Slip stitch in the next 3 stitches.
  • Double crochet in the next 3 stitches, but through the back loops only. This will create a raised effect.
  • Slip stitch in the next 3 stitches.

Repeat this pattern around the coaster. Once completed, join with a slip stitch and fasten off the orange yarn.

6. Adding the Stem:
Join the green yarn to the top of the pumpkin where you fastened off.

  • Chain 1.
  • Single crochet in the next 3 stitches.
  • Turn your work, skip the first stitch, single crochet in the next 2 stitches.
  • Turn your work again, skip the first stitch, and single crochet in the last stitch.

Fasten off the green yarn.

7. Finishing Touches:
Weave in any loose ends with the tapestry needle. Trim excess yarn with scissors.

Voila! Your pumpkin coaster is now ready to grace your table. Make a set of them for a complete autumnal feel, and enjoy your fall drinks in style!

Tips:

  • Adjust the size of your coaster by adding or reducing rounds.
  • Use these as decorative elements or even as appliques on bags, blankets, or clothing.
  • Feel free to play around with different yarn colors to make multicolored pumpkins or even spooky Halloween-themed ones!

Happy crocheting and have a fantastic fall! 🎃🍂
